Fiction writer Mary Bunten and poet Gary Lechliter and read from their work. Mary Bunten’s work has appeared in SAVEUR, The Houston Press, Art Lies, The Austin Chronicle, and elsewhere. A native of Houston, Texas, she currently works as the director of The Writers Place. Gary Lechliter’s poetry has recently appeared in Main Street Rag, New Mexico Poetry Review, Straylight, Tears in the Fence, and Wisconsin Review. He is the editor and publisher of the I-70 Review.
Creative Nonfiction 101

This class focuses on the basics of creative nonfiction, how it differs from traditional nonfiction, and why it is a genre that is quickly gaining in popularity. We will talk about what creative nonfiction is (telling a true story in a creative way using elements of fiction such as plot, setting, character development) and what it isn't (using creative license to the point in which a true story is no longer true). We will talk about how and why creative nonfiction can be a powerful form of writing, and will look at works by some of the genre’s greats, including Lee Gutkind, Joan Didion and Jean Marie Laskas. Participants are welcome to bring a work-in-progress, if the particular draft has a creative nonfiction bent or if the writer wishes to turn the piece into a work of creative nonfiction. All participants are encouraged to come with questions relating to the genre.

Novelist Marchel Denise Alverson memoirist Kate Meadows read from their work.
Marchel Denise Alverson’s novel Kissed by Madness is a fictional account of domestic violence. She is a communications specialist for Unity World Headquarters. Kate Meadows’ memoir Tough Love: A Wyoming Childhood explores growing up among the grisly and sometimes uncivilized characters who call western Wyoming home.

Part of The Writers Place Reading Series. Poets read from their work. Janet Sunderland is a memoirist and poet whose chapbook At the Boundary was released by Finishing Line Press in May of 2013. Her poems and essays have appeared in numerous journals, including Rockhurst Review, Lalitamba, Touch: A Journal of Healing, and Kansas City Voices. The Kansas City Star listed Jeanie Wilson’s book The Door into the Dream—co-authored with her husband Thomas Zvi Wilson—as one of 100 Most Noteworthy Books for 2006. Jeanie hosts the Thomas Zvi Wilson Reading series co-sponsored by The Writers Place and Johnson County Central Resource Library. A Pushcart nominee, Jan Duncan-O’Neal, is a native of the Kansas City area, with 12 books to her credit including her chapbook Voices: Lost and Found. She is an editor for I-70 Review.

Poets read from their work. Hadara Bar-Nadav is the author of three collections of poetry: Lullaby (with Exit Sign), The Frame Called Ruin, and A Glass of Milk to Kiss Goodnight. She is co-author, with Michelle Boisseau, of Writing Poems, 8th edition, and is associate professor of English at the University of Missouri–Kansas City. Wayne Miller is the author of three poetry collections: The City, Our City, The Book of Props, and Only the Senses Sleep. He lives in Kansas City and teaches as the University of Central Missouri, where he edits Pleiades: A Journal of New Writing. Corey Marks is the author of collections The Radio Tree, which won the Green Rose Prize, and Renunciation, which won the National Poetry Series. He teaches at the University of North Texas and serves, with Bruce Bond, as Poetry Editor of American Literary Review.
