2013 Power of Reading Patron Party

Our thanks to all of you who helped make this year's book and wine tasting fundraiser a success. The weather cleared, the people came, and this plus the books and wines combined to make a wonderful evening. We are so fortunate to have such wonderful supporters, and we are grateful for your contributions.

Books we tasted

Vivien Jennings, owner, Rainy Day Books
The Maid’s Version by Daniel Woodrell
The Maid's Version, set in the Ozarks in 1929, tells the story of a dancehall fire from the perspective of a mother working as a maid for a prominent family, and follows her dogged pursuit of justice after losing her sister in the disaster.

Jane Chu, CEO, Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts
Musicophelia:  Tales of Music and the Brain by Oliver Sacks
Dr. Sacks investigates the power of music to move us, to heal, and to haunt us.  The book has special meaning for Jane because, since she trained as a musician and now works so closely with musicians, she feels that her life is a testament to the power of music.

Philomene Bennett, Artist
My Beloved World by Sonia Sotomayer
Open by Andre Agassi
These two intimate and honest autobiographies tell stories of hard work and determination leading to great achievement.

Brent Schondelmeyer, Communications Director for Local Investment Commission (LINC)
A Hole in the World by Richard Rhodes.
Rhodes' memoir, first published in 1990, helped launch and legitimate a decade-long publishing phenomenon, the memoir of abused childhood.  The tenth anniversary edition offers new reflections on the abuse he and his brother suffered, changing sentiments over time, and readers' responses to the book.
